An extensive 60-day cruise circling Australia has been cancelled in the wake of the fatal incident of an older woman who was stranded by the ship on a remote coastal location.

The passenger had been trekking on Lizard Island with other travelers from the Coral Adventurer, but separated from the party for a break. The vessel sailed away leaving her and returned later that day after the personnel became aware the woman was unaccounted for.

A major search operation located her person the subsequent day.

Authorities are looking into the event, together with investigators and the medical examiner.

The CEO of the shipping company said that guests and crew on the vessel were told that the continuation of the journey had been called off due to the "tragic passing and earlier technical problems".

Via official communication, he added that guests would be given a full refund, and said the company was working "to arrange the return journeys of the passengers via private aircraft".
